The purpose. In this paper, we summarize the results of studies of some domestic authors and our own studies on the introduction of a competent approach in the educational process of higher education institutions of trade and light industry of Ukraine. In our works, we have formulated and described some of the key professional competences of specialists in the commodity profile, which are the most common in Ukrainian trade. It is advisable that commodity traders engaged in the trade of individual product groups have the necessary techniques of examination of the properties, level of quality and safety of these product groups. On the basis of the analysis of literary sources and the generalization of the results of their own research, the purpose of the work is to formulate and substantiate theoretical foundations of the implementation of the competence approach in the system of higher trade education of Ukrainian trade specialists. Methodology. The research used the methods provided by current state standards. Performed a review of sources of medical and medical literature, monitored and systematized the data obtained. Results. Thus, the formation of theoretical foundations for the implementation of the competence approach in the higher education system of trade specialists of Ukraine requires a number of researches, developments and making scientifically and soundly and administratively weighted decisions.There is a need to create a more sophisticated national educational standard for training specialists in the commercial and commercial profile only in higher education institutions of Ukraine with a broader list of professional competencies for professionals working in the field of trade.The necessity to deepen the commodity research related to the optimization, standardization and certification of professional competencies of specialists of the trade profile of the sphere of trade is substantiated. In this case, standardization should mainly cover the professional product competences of these specialists, and their certification should be functional competences related to the study of demand for particular groups of goods, the formation of their range and organization of trade.Also, given the breadth of species assortment of goods for different purposes of domestic and foreign production, which now dominate the domestic market, it should be noted that the simultaneous formation and justification of the list of professional competencies of specialists engaged in their implementation presents considerable difficulties and needs. Scientific novelty. The basic key competences were identified and theoretical bases of realization of the competence approach in the system of higher trade education of specialists of trade of Ukraine were formed. Practical significance. The need to create a separate, more sophisticated educational standard for training specialists in the commercial and commercial profile was identified only in the universities of the trade sector of Ukraine with a broader list of professional competencies for professionals working in the field of trade
